Thu Feb 20 11:22:40 UTC 2025: **BJP Leader Parvesh Verma Appointed Delhi Cabinet Minister**

NEW DELHI – Parvesh Verma, a prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader who defeated Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi Assembly constituency, has been sworn in as a cabinet minister in the Delhi government. Verma, who hails from the Jat community, was administered the oath of office shortly after Rekha Gupta assumed the Chief Ministership.

Verma’s victory over Kejriwal in the 2025 Delhi elections by a margin of 4,089 votes marks a significant political achievement. He previously served as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Mehrauli from 2013-2014 and has a history of electoral success, having won both the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He was denied a Lok Sabha ticket in the last election, a decision reportedly made to allow him to focus on a larger role in Delhi politics.

Verma’s political career began early, with involvement in the RSS as a Bal Swayamsevak in 1991. He later joined the BJP Yuva Morcha and served as the Delhi Pradesh BJP general secretary. He declared assets worth ₹90 crore (approximately $10.8 million USD) during his nomination for the New Delhi Assembly seat, including ₹77.89 crore in movable assets and ₹12.19 crore in immovable assets.

Verma has faced controversy for several inflammatory statements made during the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, including remarks targeting the Muslim community. These statements led to legal challenges in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court. Despite these controversies, his appointment highlights the BJP’s confidence in his political capabilities.
