Tue Feb 18 12:31:16 UTC 2025: ## Zeiss India and IISc Launch AI Research Lab for Eye Care

**Bengaluru, February 18, 2025** – Zeiss India, an optics and optoelectronics technology company, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have jointly established a new research lab focused on artificial intelligence (AI) in eye care. Located on the IISc campus, the lab will leverage AI to improve ophthalmology, aiming for breakthroughs in early diagnosis, personalized treatment, and accessibility.

The initiative, funded as part of Zeiss India’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, will initially concentrate on creating datasets for glaucoma research, AI-enabled early diabetic retinopathy screening, and early detection of age-related cognitive impairment. The lab will also develop portable devices for large-scale screening in remote areas, thus easing the burden on healthcare workers. Furthermore, the lab will collaborate with hospitals to collect, standardize, and annotate data for high-quality AI development.

The lab will be staffed by Masters and PhD students sponsored by Zeiss India, starting with two Masters students and a planned recruitment of two PhD students. The goal is to have 8-10 researchers within three years.

IISc Dean of the Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Sciences Division, Dr. Rajesh Sundaresan, highlighted the lab’s alignment with the institute’s plans for a new medical school and hospital. He emphasized the importance of bridging the gap between clinical research and practice in India, stating that AI can accelerate better healthcare delivery. Ashish Modi, Head of Centre of Application Research at Zeiss India, confirmed the lab’s high-end IT infrastructure.
