Tue Feb 18 20:54:04 UTC 2025: ## Pope Francis Hospitalized with Double Pneumonia, but in Good Spirits
**Rome, Italy** – Pope Francis remains hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after being diagnosed with double pneumonia, the Vatican announced Tuesday. The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been battling a respiratory infection for over a week, is also suffering from asthmatic bronchitis, necessitating treatment with cortisone and antibiotics.
While the Vatican described the Pope’s condition as “complex,” they emphasized that he is in “good spirits” and breathing without the assistance of a ventilator. A CAT scan revealed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, prompting adjustments to his medication. This is the second change in his drug therapy since his admission on February 14th.
All of the Pope’s public engagements have been cancelled through Sunday. This includes several events planned for the upcoming 2025 Holy Year. The Vatican stated that Francis will remain hospitalized for as long as medically necessary. His pre-existing lung condition, resulting from pleurisy and a partial lung removal in his youth, increases his susceptibility to respiratory infections.
