Wed Feb 19 15:47:57 UTC 2025: **Delhi BJP Appoints Rekha Gupta as Chief Minister, Emphasizing Women’s Role in Politics**

NEW DELHI – In a move seen as strategically significant, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appointed Rekha Gupta as the new Chief Minister of Delhi on Wednesday. Gupta, 41, a first-time MLA, secured a decisive victory in the recent Assembly elections, winning the Shalimar Bagh seat by a margin of nearly 30,000 votes. Her appointment comes after a landslide BJP victory, where the party secured 48 out of 70 seats.

While several prominent BJP leaders, including Parvesh Verma (who defeated AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal), were contenders for the top post, the party opted for Gupta, highlighting its focus on women’s representation in politics. Gupta’s background includes a long career in student politics, three terms as a councillor, and a stint as Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC). She also served as the National Vice President of the BJP Mahila Morcha.

The BJP’s choice is seen as a deliberate contrast to the AAP’s tenure, which saw a series of Chief Ministers, including Atishi, who served for five months. The party is emphasizing the legacy of women Chief Ministers in Delhi, including Sheila Dikshit’s 15-year rule, positioning Gupta’s appointment as a return to this tradition.

Gupta’s relatively clean political record and lack of major controversies further distinguish her from some other potential candidates. The BJP’s decision also aligns with its election manifesto, which included significant promises aimed at women voters, such as a monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500 under the Mahila Samridhi Yojana and enhanced healthcare initiatives for pregnant women. The party’s strategy appears to have resonated strongly with women voters, who showed a higher turnout than men in the recent elections. With Gupta’s appointment, the BJP aims to establish a new chapter in Delhi’s political landscape, emphasizing both gender equality and a fresh perspective.
