Wed Feb 19 15:16:14 UTC 2025: **Nilgiris Forest Division Prepares for Increased Fire Risk**
UDHAGAMANDALAM, INDIA (February 19, 2025) – The Nilgiris forest division in India is implementing proactive measures to combat an anticipated rise in forest fires this year. Officials attribute the increased risk to heavy ground frost in December 2024 and January 2025, which has dried out undergrowth and created flammable conditions.
Sixty forest staff, including temporary fire watchers, have been deployed across the division’s twelve ranges to facilitate rapid fire detection and suppression. Over 100 kilometers of firebreaks are being created to contain fires within smaller areas. A dedicated control room has been established to monitor and coordinate fire-fighting efforts.
The Forest Department plans to take action against individuals intentionally starting fires near forest areas, primarily for cattle fodder cultivation. Collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Services is sought to bolster manpower and equipment. A joint meeting with the district administration is scheduled to discuss further mitigation strategies. The proactive approach aims to minimize damage and ensure the safety of the Nilgiris’ valuable forest resources.
