The incident coincided with a heightened military presence around Taiwan, with Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence reporting the detection of 62 Chinese military aircraft near the island in the preceding 48 hours. This surge in activity followed the passage of a US naval destroyer and survey ship through the strait earlier in the week, a move that drew sharp criticism from Beijing.
China views Taiwan as a breakaway province and regularly condemns any action it perceives as supporting Taiwanese independence. The presence of both Canadian and US vessels in the strait underscores the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region, with the US and its allies routinely challenging China’s claims of sovereignty over the waterway.
The US recently updated its State Department website, removing a statement explicitly opposing Taiwanese independence and adding a reference to Taiwan’s participation in a Pentagon technology project. While reaffirming opposition to unilateral changes to the status quo by either side, the revised statement signals a shift in the US approach, although it continues to emphasise the importance of resolving cross-strait issues peacefully. Taiwan welcomed this updated statement.
