**NEW DELHI** – A stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday claimed the lives of at least 18 people, including 11 women and five children, and left over a dozen injured. The tragedy occurred as passengers surged towards platforms 14 and 15, attempting to board trains heading to the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.
According to officials, the stampede was triggered when individuals descending a foot-over bridge slipped and fell, causing a cascading effect amongst the large crowd. Railway authorities have announced a high-level inquiry into the incident to determine the cause and prevent future occurrences.
