Wed Feb 12 13:50:34 UTC 2025: ## Sweden Tightens School Security Following Deadly Shooting
**Stockholm, Sweden** – In the wake of Sweden’s worst mass shooting, which claimed 10 lives at an adult education center in Örebro on February 4th, the government announced sweeping new security measures for schools nationwide. The measures, expected to come into effect on July 1st, 2025, include enhanced access control, improved emergency plans, and controversially, the authorization for teachers to search students’ bags without warning.
Education Minister Johan Pehrson detailed the new regulations at a press conference Wednesday. These will mandate emergency plans for all schools, restricted access requiring keys, codes, or badges, and simplified procedures for installing camera surveillance. Crucially, teachers and staff at primary, secondary, and adult education centers will gain the power to search students’ belongings without prior notice.
“We are working intensively to improve security for students, teachers and other school employees,” Pehrson stated.
The measures follow the February 4th shooting perpetrated by 35-year-old Rickard Andersson, an unemployed recluse with a hunting permit. Andersson, who had previously attended the Campus Risbergska adult education center, killed 10 people before taking his own life. Police recovered three firearms, ammunition, and shell casings at the scene. While a motive remains unclear, police described Andersson as having lived in isolation since 2016 with minimal social contact.
The government’s response also includes previously announced amendments to weapons laws, aiming to restrict access to semi-automatic firearms. The proposed school security measures are currently awaiting parliamentary approval, but are expected to pass.
