**Bengaluru, India** – Defense Minister Rajnath Singh declared India’s defense sector is experiencing a revolutionary transformation, transitioning from heavy reliance on imports to a leading global player. Addressing the valedictory ceremony of Aero India 2025, Singh highlighted the significant increase in indigenous defense production, with domestically manufactured fighter jets, missile systems, and naval vessels not only securing India’s borders but also attracting international attention.
Singh emphasized the unprecedented success of Aero India 2025, describing the event as “historic” and brimming with “energy.” He noted that a decade ago, 65-70% of India’s defense equipment was imported; now, a similar percentage is domestically produced. This self-reliance extends to exports, with India now supplying various defense equipment, including the BrahMos and Akash missile systems, to numerous countries.
The Minister lauded the contributions of India’s robust defense industrial complex, comprising 16 public sector undertakings, 430 licensed companies, and approximately 16,000 MSMEs, with the private sector actively participating and contributing 21% of total defense production. He stressed the government’s commitment to fostering a level playing field for both public and private sectors in defense manufacturing.
Singh also praised the Indian armed forces for their wholehearted adoption of indigenously produced weaponry, stating that their trust is crucial for accelerating the country’s self-reliance initiatives. The event saw participation from over 500 delegates from 84 countries, including numerous defense ministers and service chiefs, alongside 931 exhibitors (782 Indian). This included a record number of 58 Original Equipment Manufacturers and 115 global CEOs. The Minister expressed confidence that India is evolving into a global leader in defense innovation and aerospace technology. The public will have access to the airshow for the next two days.
