**SEOUL, South Korea –** A 40-year-old elementary school teacher is in police custody following the stabbing death of a six-year-old student in Daejeon, South Korea. The incident, which occurred Monday afternoon in an after-school program, has sent shockwaves through the nation.
Police Chief Yuk Jong-myeong of Daejeon’s western district reported that the suspect, who had recently returned from a health leave and had a history of depression, allegedly stabbed the first-grader in an audio-visual room. The teacher also sustained self-inflicted wounds and is receiving medical treatment.
The girl was reported missing at 5:15 p.m. local time; her grandmother discovered her body nearly 40 minutes later. Despite emergency efforts, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok, assuming leadership following President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment, has ordered a comprehensive investigation and mandated that education authorities implement measures to prevent similar tragedies.
