Wed Feb 12 11:35:21 UTC 2025: ## Puducherry Assembly Session Marked by Walkout and Suspension

**Puducherry, February 12, 2025** – The Puducherry Assembly witnessed a tumultuous short session today, culminating in a walkout by the opposition DMK and Congress parties and the suspension of an independent legislator.

The disruption began when independent legislator Nehru alias Kuppusamy protested the Speaker, R. Selvam, proceeding with the session despite a pending no-confidence motion against him. Kuppusamy, along with two other independents, filed the motion in December, alleging partisan behavior by the Speaker. His protest, involving squatting in the well of the House and shouting slogans, led to his removal and subsequent suspension for violating assembly procedures.

This action further inflamed the opposition, who then criticized the central government’s alleged neglect of Puducherry, citing insufficient flood relief and budgetary support. The ensuing heated exchange between the opposition and the ruling party, involving the Home Minister A. Namassivayam and BJP legislators, prompted the DMK and Congress members to stage a walkout.

Chief Minister N. Rangasamy countered the opposition’s claims, asserting that the central government had provided ₹61 crore in cyclone relief and actively supported the territory’s development initiatives. He further moved a resolution expressing confidence in Speaker Selvam, which was adopted before the Assembly was adjourned sine die.
