**NEW DELHI** – The Supreme Court today dismissed Indrani Mukerjea’s appeal to overturn a Bombay High Court ruling that denied her permission to travel abroad. Mukerjea, accused of murdering her daughter Sheena Bora, had sought permission to visit Spain and the United Kingdom.
The Supreme Court bench, comprising Justices MM Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal, rejected Mukerjea’s plea, citing the sensitivity of the ongoing trial and the significant progress already made. The CBI, opposing the travel request, highlighted that 96 witnesses have already testified in the case, which is now nearing its halfway point.
While Mukerjea’s counsel argued that 92 witnesses remain and that the trial court’s recent vacancy has caused delays, the Supreme Court instead ordered the trial court to conclude proceedings within one year. This directive follows the High Court’s September 27th reversal of a lower court’s earlier decision granting Mukerjea temporary travel permission. Mukerjea had initially been granted leave to travel by a special court in July, a decision subsequently challenged and overturned by the High Court.
