Wed Feb 12 11:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Mumbai Indians Captain Hardik Pandya Banned for IPL 2025 Opener

**Mumbai, India** – Hardik Pandya, officially named captain of the Mumbai Indians for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), will miss the team’s opening match due to a one-match ban imposed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The ban stems from accumulating slow over-rate penalties in the 2024 season. This is Pandya’s third offense, resulting in the suspension.

The BCCI’s regulations stipulate a ₹12 lakh fine for a first slow over-rate offense, with subsequent penalties escalating. A one-match ban is imposed for repeat offenses. Mumbai Indians failed to meet the required over-rate on three separate occasions, the final instance occurring in last year’s final against Lucknow.

In Pandya’s absence, Suryakumar Yadav is the frontrunner to lead the team in the first match. The Mumbai Indians have retained key players including Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma. They also acquired Trent Boult and Will Jacks in the auction. The team hopes that veterans Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav will be in top form by the start of the IPL. Tilak Varma is also expected to be a key player.

The Mumbai Indians squad for the 2025 season includes Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Ryan Rickelton, Srijit Krishnan, Bevan-John Jacobs, N. Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, Will Jacks, Mitchell Santner, Raj Angad Bawa, Vignesh Puthur, Hardik Pandya, Trent Boult, Karan Sharma, Deepak Chahar, Allah Gazanfar, Ashwini Kumar, Reece Topley, Venkat Satyaranayana, Penmetsa, Arjun Tendulkar, Lizard Williams, and Jasprit Bumrah.
