**NEW DELHI, February 12** – Several Indian states are observing a public holiday today to commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Ravidas, a prominent poet-saint of the Bhakti movement. Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttarakhand are among the states marking Guru Ravidas Jayanti with the closure of government offices, schools, and colleges.
While not a nationwide gazetted holiday, the occasion is widely celebrated. In Punjab’s Jalandhar district, liquor and meat shops are closed in observance. The closure of such establishments in other states remains unclear. Guru Ravidas Jayanti falls on Magh Purnima according to the Hindu calendar, and this year it is celebrated on February 12th.
