Wed Feb 12 03:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru’s Parking Crisis: Residents Struggle as Policy Remains Unimplemented

**Bengaluru, February 12, 2025** – Bengaluru’s burgeoning vehicle population is exacerbating a severe parking crisis, leaving residents of once-quiet neighborhoods frustrated and considering relocation. The problem is particularly acute in areas like Indiranagar, J.P. Nagar, Banashankari, and Subramanyapura, where pre-owned car showrooms, travel companies, and cab drivers frequently occupy public spaces, often ignoring parking regulations.

Residents report significant inconveniences, including blocked driveways, obstructed footpaths, and a general loss of privacy due to constant stranger traffic. Artists residing near J.P. Nagar’s Ranga Shankara theatre highlight the impact on their community, with pre-owned car showrooms and restobars monopolizing street parking, forcing pedestrians onto busy roads. Similar issues are reported in Banashankari, where a showroom has encroached on footpaths and lanes. The situation is further complicated by buses belonging to travel companies parking along roadsides near Subramanyapura lake, creating safety and sanitation concerns.

Despite the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) introducing Parking Policy 2.0 in December 2020, aimed at regulating on-street parking through a permit system and fees, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has yet to fully implement it city-wide. A BBMP official attributed this to resistance from stakeholders, insufficient infrastructure, and ongoing discussions regarding the feasibility of a complete ban on on-street parking. The official indicated that efforts are underway to revise and implement the policy, possibly through a smart parking initiative.

The current situation underscores the urgent need for effective solutions to Bengaluru’s parking challenges, impacting not just residents’ quality of life but also pedestrian safety and traffic flow. The lack of implementation of existing policies and the ongoing debate on future strategies highlight the complexity of addressing this growing urban problem.
