Sun Feb 09 12:00:00 UTC 2025: ## New Zealand Cricketer Suffers Freak Injury During Pakistan ODI, Sparking Host Nation Controversy
**LAHORE, PAKISTAN** – New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra suffered a serious facial injury during Sunday’s first ODI against Pakistan, sparking outrage on social media and raising questions about Pakistan’s suitability to host future international tournaments.
Ravindra was struck in the forehead by a fiercely-hit ball while attempting a catch during the 37th over. The incident, occurring under the stadium’s LED floodlights, left him bleeding profusely and temporarily dazed. He received immediate medical attention on the field before being escorted off, receiving a warm applause from the Gaddafi Stadium crowd.
While New Zealand Cricket confirmed Ravindra sustained a laceration to the forehead but is otherwise well and passed an initial Head Injury Assessment (HIA), the incident triggered a wave of criticism online. Many blamed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the quality of the stadium’s lighting, suggesting the LED lights may have impaired Ravindra’s vision of the approaching ball.
Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif highlighted concerns about the glare from the LED lights, stating that the bright glow can make it difficult to track a ball travelling in a flat trajectory. This led to calls on social media for the International Cricket Council (ICC) to reconsider Pakistan as the host for the Champions Trophy, citing safety concerns for players.
The PCB is yet to issue a formal response to the criticism. Ravindra’s condition will continue to be monitored, with his participation in New Zealand’s next match against South Africa on Monday remaining uncertain.
