Sun Feb 09 13:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Commuter Rail Chaos: Derailment Causes Widespread Delays and Cancellations Ahead of Major Snowstorm

**Boston, MA –** A commuter train derailment outside South Station caused significant disruptions to train service Saturday afternoon, impacting both MBTA Commuter Rail and Amtrak lines. The incident, occurring on the eve of a predicted major snowstorm, led to numerous cancellations and widespread delays.

Initially, two inbound and four outbound MBTA Commuter Rail trains on the Needham and Fairmount lines were cancelled, starting around 2 p.m. Six Amtrak trains, including two Acela high-speed trains, were also cancelled. The MBTA attributed the delays to a “slow-speed upright derailment” outside South Station, which blocked tracks and caused significant congestion. Numerous trains experienced delays of up to 45 minutes prior to the cancellations.

While Amtrak service between Boston and Providence was fully restored by 4:26 p.m., residual delays persisted. Even later in the evening, the MBTA website reported delays across all train lines, and further cancellations of two outbound Fairmount Line trains occurred.

The incident unfolded as winter storm warnings went into effect for much of Massachusetts and New England, raising concerns about potential further disruptions to transportation in the coming hours. The MBTA has yet to release a statement on the cause of the derailment. The investigation is ongoing.
