**New Delhi, February 8, 2025** – In a stunning upset, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won a resounding victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, securing 48 out of 70 seats and ending the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) 12-year reign. This marks the BJP’s return to power in the national capital after a 27-year absence.
The AAP, which had governed Delhi for the past three terms, suffered a significant defeat, winning only 22 seats. The Congress party failed to win a single seat for the third consecutive election.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi attributed the BJP’s victory to the people of Delhi’s desire for “satisfaction” over “appeasement,” criticizing both the AAP and Congress. He pledged “double-speed” development for Delhi, promising to address issues like dilapidated roads, garbage disposal, and air pollution. He also stated that the CAG report on alleged AAP corruption will be tabled in the first Assembly session.
The BJP’s victory was particularly significant given the defeat of AAP’s chief ministerial candidate and incumbent Chief Minister Atishi, who lost her Kalkaji seat but still managed to defeat BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri. A more surprising loss for AAP was that of its convener and three-time Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who was defeated by Parvesh Verma in the New Delhi constituency. Other prominent AAP leaders, including Manish Sisodia, also lost their respective seats.
Speculation is rife regarding the BJP’s choice for the next Chief Minister. Names circulating include several BJP Lok Sabha MPs from Delhi, as well as newly elected MLAs, with the possibility of appointing multiple Deputy Chief Ministers also being considered.
While the BJP celebrated its victory, the AAP vowed to play the role of a constructive opposition. The Congress, meanwhile, acknowledged the defeat and expressed gratitude to its workers and voters. The outcome of the election has sent shockwaves through the opposition INDIA alliance, particularly given the Congress’s failure to make any inroads.
The BJP’s victory is seen as a significant shift in Delhi’s political landscape and a boost for the party ahead of the upcoming general elections. The party’s focus on local issues, coupled with a strong national campaign, proved successful in securing a decisive mandate from the Delhi electorate.
