**New Delhi** – As Delhi awaits the results of the Assembly elections, conflicting exit polls have created a buzz, painting a picture of a close contest between the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). While several exit polls predict a BJP victory, giving them an edge over AAP, AAP maintains it will secure a third consecutive term in power.
The Congress, meanwhile, is hoping for a significant improvement after dismal performances in the previous two elections, although exit polls predict minimal gains.
BJP Delhi chief Virendra Sachdeva expressed confidence in a landslide victory for his party, claiming the public is disillusioned with AAP’s governance, citing corruption and incompetence. He anticipates nearly 50 seats for the BJP.
Conversely, AAP leader Gopal Rai confidently predicted a victory for his party, securing over 50 seats, though acknowledging a tighter contest than previous elections. He dismissed the exit polls as an attempt by the opposition to create a narrative of victory.
The campaign’s final days were marked by escalating tensions. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal accused the BJP of attempting to poach AAP MLAs, offering them large sums of money and ministerial positions. The Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) subsequently launched an investigation into Kejriwal’s allegations, prompting the BJP to demand a retraction and apology.
Vote counting begins at 8 am across 19 centers in Delhi, with the results expected to determine whether Kejriwal secures a fourth term as Chief Minister or whether the BJP ends AAP’s dominance in the national capital. The 2015 and 2020 elections saw AAP win a sweeping majority, securing 67 and 62 seats respectively. A BJP victory would mark a significant shift in Delhi’s political landscape.
