Mon Feb 03 10:25:17 UTC 2025: ## TMC MLA in West Bengal Survives Attack, Raising Concerns Over Political Violence

**Kolkata, February 3, 2025** – Sabitri Mitra, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from West Bengal’s Malda district, narrowly escaped death after an alleged attack on Saturday, February 1st. Ms. Mitra reported that an unidentified vehicle rammed her car twice while she was returning home late at night. She believes the attack was a planned assassination attempt.

This incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks targeting TMC leaders and workers in West Bengal. In the past month alone, two TMC members – a councillor and a party worker – were shot dead in Malda. Earlier incidents include the January 31st brick-killing of TMC worker Santosh Yadav in North 24 Parganas, and the January 25th shooting of party leader Krishnapada Mondal in Diamond Harbour. The deaths of Malda district vice-president Dulal Sarkar (January 2nd) and local leader Ataul Haque (January 14th) further highlight the escalating violence.

Police are investigating Ms. Mitra’s case, questioning 10 individuals in connection with the murder of a TMC worker in Malda. She has provided the police with the attackers’ car number.

Leader of the Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari criticized the state government’s inability to protect its own MLAs, urging Ms. Mitra to raise the issue in the Assembly. Ms. Mitra, a veteran politician with over 40 years of experience, served as the first TMC MLA from Malda and previously held positions within the Congress party. She suggested the attacks may be orchestrated by “unknown forces” aiming to eliminate Malda’s TMC leadership. However, she declined to name any specific individuals or parties involved.
