**Mumbai, February 3, 2025** – Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has demanded an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following allegations of widespread voter additions in the state. Gandhi claimed that approximately 70 lakh new voters – a number equivalent to Himachal Pradesh’s population – were added to Maharashtra’s electoral rolls between the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections. He made these claims during a Lok Sabha speech on the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address.
Gandhi alleged that this surge in voter registration, disproportionately affecting constituencies where the BJP won, indicated irregularities in the electoral process. He further stated that more voters were added in the five months between the two elections than in the previous five years. He has previously raised concerns about the transparency of the election system and requested voter lists from Maharashtra and Haryana, requests which he claims have been denied.
Fadnavis vehemently rejected Gandhi’s claims, accusing him of insulting the people of Maharashtra and questioning the democratic mandate of the recent elections. In a strongly worded statement and tweet, Fadnavis urged Gandhi to “introspect” rather than engage in “slander” and demanded a public apology. He highlighted the BJP’s strong performance in the state elections, winning 132 seats compared to the Congress’s 16.
