**NEW DELHI** – Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday dismissed opposition claims that the recent Union Budget was a mere vote-grabbing exercise targeted at Bihar and Delhi. In an exclusive interview with NDTV, she characterized the budget as “by the people, of the people, for the people,” emphasizing its aim to support the middle class and bolster India’s progress towards a “Viksit Bharat” (developed India).
Sitharaman rejected accusations of political maneuvering, asserting that the government consistently recognizes honest taxpayers. She highlighted key budget provisions, including a 10% increase in capital expenditure (Capex), representing 4.3% of the GDP, as significant investments in the nation’s infrastructure and development. Further, she stressed the government’s continued focus on crucial sectors such as health, nutrition, and education through existing welfare schemes. The Finance Minister maintained that the budget strikes a balance between strengthening the nation’s foundation and addressing social welfare needs.
