DURHAM, NC – A lesser-known chapter in the legendary career of Shaquille O’Neal resurfaced this week, recalling a surprising defeat during his time at Louisiana State University. In a 1991 game against Duke University, the future NBA superstar was outplayed by then-unknown Blue Devil Christian Laettner.

O’Neal, averaging 27 points and leading the nation in rebounds at the time, found himself overwhelmed by Duke’s intense defense and the hostile home crowd at Cameron Indoor Stadium. He scored only 15 points, tying his season low, in LSU’s 88-70 loss. Laettner, in contrast, dominated with 24 points and 11 rebounds, effectively neutralizing O’Neal’s offensive power.

Duke’s coach, Mike Krzyzewski, lauded Laettner’s performance and his team’s defensive strategy, which focused on aggressively attacking O’Neal and forcing him into foul trouble. The Blue Devils went on to win the NCAA Championship that year and the following year.

O’Neal, in his memoir “Shaq Uncut,” admitted to being completely surprised by Laettner’s skill and the intensity of the game, stating he had never heard of Laettner before the match-up. He later got his revenge during his final college season, before entering the NBA draft. However, Laettner’s success that night remains a notable upset in O’Neal’s impressive collegiate career. The two later became teammates on the Miami Heat, forging a newfound respect for one another.
