Sat Feb 01 16:06:13 UTC 2025: ## Andhra Pradesh Health Official Downplays Guillain-Barré Syndrome Concerns Amidst Maharashtra Outbreak

**VIJAYAWADA, Andhra Pradesh – February 1, 2025** – Following a rise in Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in neighboring Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh’s Director of Medical Education (DME), D.S.V.L. Narasimham, has assured the public there is no cause for alarm. In a press release issued today, Dr. Narasimham clarified that while GBS is a serious neurological disorder, it is not infectious and most patients recover with timely treatment.

GBS, explained the DME, is a rare condition where the body’s immune system attacks its own peripheral nerves, causing weakness and tingling in the limbs that can progress to paralysis in severe cases. While acknowledging the severity of the condition, Dr. Narasimham emphasized that Andhra Pradesh hospitals are prepared to handle GBS cases, with established treatment protocols in place.

The DME noted that GBS is often triggered by infections such as the flu or gastroenteritis. He stated that the situation in Maharashtra is being closely monitored by local and national health experts. Although GBS cannot be directly prevented, Dr. Narasimham advised the public to practice good hygiene, such as regular handwashing, and to avoid contact with sick individuals to minimize the risk of triggering infections that might lead to GBS. He urged anyone experiencing unusual weakness, tingling, numbness, or flu-like symptoms to seek immediate medical attention, stressing the importance of early diagnosis for effective treatment. Dr. Narasimham concluded by urging the public to remain calm and rely on official channels for information.
