Wed Jan 22 12:20:03 UTC 2025: ## Israel Seeks Hamas Replacement, Strengthens India Ties at Davos

**Davos, Switzerland –** Israeli Economy and Industry Minister Nir Barkat called for the replacement of Hamas with a leadership that recognizes Israel and seeks peace, during an interview at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. Barkat, speaking to NDTV, emphasized that Hamas’s continued existence poses a significant threat to regional stability. He stated that Hamas’s charter, focused on terrorizing Israel, necessitates a change in leadership to enable lasting peace. He expressed hope that the recent hostage exchange would be a turning point, but cautioned against assuming Hamas is definitively finished as a viable terrorist organization.

Barkat highlighted Iran and Qatar as major funders of terrorism, supporting both Hamas and Hezbollah. He stressed the importance of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and expanding the Abraham Accords to include Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and other moderate Arab states. He also noted the shared challenge of terrorism faced by both Israel and India.

The Israeli minister announced a major trade delegation to India on February 11th, aiming to expand collaborations in technology, health tech, agriculture, and security. He underscored the strong personal relationship between Prime Ministers Modi and Netanyahu as a key driver of the burgeoning India-Israel partnership, praising India’s swift support following the October attacks. Barkat emphasized Israel’s openness to the India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor, highlighting the Haifa Port as a crucial component.

Regarding recent military operations in the West Bank, Barkat reiterated Israel’s commitment to eradicating terrorism. He also expressed hope for improved relations with Syria, but cautioned against misplaced optimism, citing the current regime’s jihadist leanings. He contrasted this with the successful peace agreements Israel has established with Egypt, Jordan, and several Arab nations through the Abraham Accords. The minister concluded by highlighting India’s significant growth potential and the significant opportunities for Israeli businesses to collaborate with India under the “Make in India” initiative. However, he also noted that further discussions are needed to ensure a mutually beneficial partnership.
