Wed Jan 22 20:32:20 IST 2025: ## Tirunelveli Amma Unavagam Workers Strike Over Poor Conditions

**TIRUNELVELI, January 22, 2025** – Workers at an Amma Unavagam subsidized eatery in Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli, staged a work stoppage on Wednesday, protesting the deteriorating conditions of the facility and its surroundings. The eatery, established during the previous AIADMK regime to provide affordable meals to the poor, has reportedly suffered from neglect since the DMK came to power in 2021.

Workers cited a lack of maintenance of electrical appliances, inconsistent gas cylinder supply, and the unsanitary conditions caused by an unmaintained public toilet near the eatery. The resulting foul smell and open defecation led to a significant drop in the number of patrons, prompting fears that the facility would be shut down.

Following the strike, Tirunelveli Mayor G. Ramakrishnan visited the site along with AIADMK representatives. After appeals to revive the eatery and improve sanitation, the Mayor instructed Corporation officials to take immediate action to clean the area and restore proper maintenance of the Amma Unavagam. The officials have begun addressing the issues. The future of the nearby public toilet is also under consideration.
