Tue Jan 21 06:40:00 IST 2025: ## Ohio State’s Helmet Stickers: A Tradition of Excellence on Display in CFP Championship
**ATLANTA, GA** – Tonight’s College Football Playoff National Championship game between No. 7 Notre Dame and No. 8 Ohio State features not only a clash of college football titans, but also a unique display of tradition: Ohio State’s iconic helmet stickers.
The Buckeyes will take the field in their white road uniforms with gray sleeves, sporting helmets adorned with the now-famous buckeye leaf decals. This tradition, dating back to 1967 and initiated by former Ohio State trainer Ernie Biggs, rewards players for individual and team achievements.
Unlike some team-based systems, Ohio State’s approach varies depending on the coaching staff. Currently, players earn stickers for individual touchdowns, with quarterbacks receiving them for reaching pre-agreed-upon completion percentages. Team success also yields stickers if the Buckeyes meet specific benchmarks. Each sticker, measuring 1.25 inches, is meticulously placed in a pyramid formation, starting at the bottom of the helmet. A full helmet, with its limited space, represents a season of significant contributions.
“You see a guy with a ton of stickers on his helmet, and you know he’s a dude,” Ohio State wide receiver Emeka Egbuka explained in a previous interview. The stickers serve as a visible symbol of a player’s impact and respect within the team.
While Ohio State is prominent for its sticker tradition, they are one of 13 Division I FBS programs utilizing a similar reward system. The practice adds a layer of unique visual storytelling to the game, showcasing individual accomplishments within a team-focused pursuit of victory. Tonight’s championship game will serve as the ultimate stage for these small but significant markers of achievement.
