Tue Jan 21 06:57:39 IST 2025: **Indian-American Usha Vance Makes History as First Hindu Second Lady**

WASHINGTON D.C. – Usha Vance created history on Monday, becoming the first Indian-American and Hindu Second Lady of the United States. Her husband, J.D. Vance, was sworn in as the 50th Vice President, with Usha holding their daughter, Mirabel Rose, and a Bible during the ceremony. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a former mentor to Usha, administered the oath.

President Donald Trump, speaking after the ceremony, praised Usha Vance, stating she is “smarter than her husband” and even considered her for the Vice Presidency.

The ceremony was a family affair, with the Vance children – Ewan Blaine, Vivek, and Mirabel Rose – present at the podium. Usha, dressed in pink, beamed with pride as her husband took the oath. J.D. Vance’s mother, Beverly Aikins, who overcame drug addiction, also attended the event.

Usha, daughter of Telugu immigrants and a corporate litigator, left a high-profile law firm following her husband’s VP nomination. She previously clerked for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Kavanaugh. A Yale Law graduate, she met her husband while studying there, and he has credited her in his memoir with guiding him through his academic and professional life. She switched her party affiliation from Democrat to Republican.

J.D. Vance, who rose from a challenging background marked by poverty and a mother struggling with addiction, served in the military before attending Yale and subsequently pursuing a career in venture capital. He was elected to the Senate in 2022 before his ascension to the Vice Presidency.
