Sat Jan 18 18:21:15 UTC 2025: ## Man Kills Wife, Son After Moneylender Harassment, Attempts Suicide

**Pune, India** – A 45-year-old man, Vaibhav Hande, allegedly killed his wife and 9-year-old son before attempting suicide in Chikhali, near Pune, on Saturday. Police say Hande administered a large dose of sleeping pills to his 36-year-old wife, Shubhangi, and their son, Dhanraj, before trying to hang himself.

Hande’s 14-year-old son, who was visiting relatives in Mumbai, received a message from his father outlining his plan on Friday night. Alarmed, the teenager contacted neighbours, who alerted police after receiving no response at the family’s flat. Police found Hande alive and rushed him to a hospital.

Hande’s confession points to harassment by moneylenders as the motive. He reportedly borrowed a total of 12 lakh rupees (approximately $145,000 USD) from four individuals – Santosh Kadam, Surekha Kadam, Santosh Pawar, and Javed Khan – at high interest rates. Despite repaying the principal plus an additional 9 lakh rupees, he claimed the lenders continued to harass him for more money.

Police have booked the four individuals for criminal intimidation, and an investigation is underway. Hande is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.
