Fri Jan 17 20:20:00 UTC 2025: ## American Poet Peter Gizzi Wins Prestigious TS Eliot Prize

**London/Valencia –** American poet Peter Gizzi has been awarded the prestigious TS Eliot Prize for his collection *Fierce Elegy*, a deeply personal work inspired by the deaths of family members. The 65-year-old poet, described as a “poet’s poet,” expressed overwhelming emotion upon receiving the award, stating he was “shocked” and almost brought to tears.

Gizzi’s work, which explores themes of grief, loss, and the mystery of life and death, has been praised for its intimate and vulnerable tone. The collection reflects a shift in his poetic style from politically engaged works to a more inward-looking exploration of personal experience, though he emphasizes that his poems are not simply autobiographical. He views the “I” in his poetry as a collective pronoun, carrying the weight of shared historical consciousness.

The “fierce” quality of the elegies, Gizzi explains, stems from an act of vulnerability, transforming a broken heart in a harsh world into a resilient spirit. He also highlights the importance of sound and musicality in his work, favoring a deliberately minimalist style using “little words” to achieve maximum impact, drawing inspiration from the American objectivist poet George Oppen.

Gizzi’s journey into poetry began in tragedy following the death of his father. His brother’s poem, a “requiem,” sparked his lifelong engagement with the art form, leading him to believe poetry offers a unique way to express profound emotions. He cites influences such as Allen Ginsberg, Rimbaud, Keith Waldrop and John Ashbery, viewing poetry as “like friendship – a very intimate art.”

The award holds significant meaning for Gizzi, who has long admired TS Eliot and even undertook a pilgrimage to Little Gidding, the village featured in Eliot’s *Four Quartets*, with fellow poet JH Prynne. Gizzi expressed gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing his deep commitment to his craft and his belief in his work. He will celebrate the win with family.
