Fri Jan 17 20:47:59 UTC 2025: ## Protests Force Cancellation of “Emergency” Screenings Across Punjab

**Amritsar, Punjab –** The release of Kangana Ranaut’s film “Emergency” has been effectively blocked in Punjab following widespread protests by Sikh organizations. Theatres across the state cancelled screenings on Friday after demonstrations outside cinemas.

The film, a political drama depicting former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi with Ranaut in the titular role, faced intense opposition from groups who allege it misrepresents the Sikh community. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC), the highest temporal authority of Sikhs, led the protests, demanding a ban on the film. Following their demonstrations, cinema owners voluntarily ceased screenings to avoid further conflict.

The SGPC’s chief secretary, Kulwant Singh Manan, stated that the protests were successful in preventing the film’s release, and warned of renewed action should any theatre attempt to screen “Emergency.” Online ticket booking websites also removed listings for the film in Punjab. Police confirmed that screenings were cancelled in Amritsar following discussions with cinema management.

Ranaut condemned the cancellations on social media, calling it “complete harassment of art and the artist” and dismissing accusations as propaganda aimed at harming her image and her film. Her statement followed similar calls for a ban from Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira, who echoed concerns about the film’s portrayal of Sikhs. The SGPC president, Harjinder Singh Dhami, previously wrote to the Chief Minister expressing similar concerns and warning of potential community outrage.

The film’s release had already been delayed following requests from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for cuts after initial concerns were raised by Sikh groups. The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) also voiced its opposition to the film. The situation highlights the sensitive nature of historical depictions and their impact on community sentiments.
