**NEW DELHI, January 17, 2025** – India is bolstering its naval presence in the Gulf of Aden, Red Sea, and waters adjacent to East African countries in response to escalating security threats, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced Friday. Singh emphasized the crucial link between India’s economic prosperity and maritime security, stating that protecting sea routes is paramount. He noted a decline in the presence of major naval powers in the Indian Ocean Region, contrasting it with India’s increased naval deployment.
The minister’s statement came during an event celebrating 2024 as the “Year of Naval Civilians,” highlighting the vital contribution of the Navy’s civilian workforce – one-third of its total personnel – in supporting operations. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the civilians’ roles in technical assistance, administration, and logistics. An exhibition showcased the artistic talents and contributions of these “soldiers without uniforms,” as Singh described them. Nine meritorious awards and sixteen cash awards were presented to recognize outstanding civilian service.
Singh also stressed the growing importance of cybersecurity in maintaining maritime security and the need for strengthening India’s offensive and defensive capabilities amidst a changing global order. The increased naval presence underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding its economic interests and maintaining stability in the strategically important Indian Ocean Region.
