**SEOUL, South Korea** – Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has refused to cooperate with investigators, skipping a scheduled Friday interrogation, his lawyer announced. This defiance comes as authorities prepare to seek a court warrant to extend his detention beyond the initial 48-hour limit.
Mr. Yoon, the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested, is under investigation for allegedly attempting insurrection by briefly imposing martial law in December. While his lawyers unsuccessfully challenged the legality of his arrest, the Seoul Central District Court upheld the arrest Thursday.
The Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) aims to secure a detention warrant for up to 20 days. Mr. Yoon’s lawyer, Seok Dong-hyeon, stated that the former president had already provided his statement and saw no need for further questioning. He expressed hope the court would carefully consider the alleged illegality of the arrest when reviewing the warrant application.
The 48-hour questioning period, temporarily paused for the court’s review, is expected to expire Friday evening. The situation marks South Korea’s worst political crisis in decades, fueled by Mr. Yoon’s controversial martial law declaration.
The crisis has drawn international attention, with the US expressing concerns about the potential for North Korea to exploit the instability. While North Korea has largely refrained from public commentary, state media reported on Mr. Yoon’s arrest, criticizing his actions.
The outcome of the court’s decision on the detention warrant will determine the next phase of this unfolding political drama.
