**Rabat, Morocco – January 17, 2025** – At least 40 Pakistani migrants are feared dead after a boat carrying 80 people capsized near the Moroccan coast while attempting to reach Spain. The incident, which occurred near the Moroccan port of Dakhla, has sparked outrage and calls for action against human trafficking.
According to the migrant rights group Walking Borders, the boat, which departed from Mauritania on January 2nd, may have claimed as many as 50 lives. Moroccan authorities rescued 36 survivors a day earlier. Walking Borders CEO Helena Maleno confirmed that 44 of the presumed dead were Pakistani. She highlighted the migrants’ 13-day ordeal at sea without rescue.
The Pakistan Foreign Office confirmed the incident, stating that its embassy in Rabat is coordinating with Moroccan authorities. A team has been dispatched to Dakhla to assist the Pakistani survivors. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has instructed relevant agencies to provide all possible support, while President Asif Ali Zardari called for measures to combat human smuggling. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif demanded a report and promised strict action against those involved in human trafficking.
