Fri Jan 17 07:26:22 UTC 2025: **Massive Fire Engulfs California Battery Storage Plant, Prompts Evacuations**
MOSS LANDING, California (January 17, 2025) – A major fire erupted at one of the world’s largest battery storage plants in Moss Landing, California, on Thursday, forcing the evacuation of approximately 1,500 people and the closure of a section of Highway 1. The blaze, which sent towering flames and black smoke into the air, broke out at the Vistra Energy-owned Moss Landing Power Plant, located about 77 miles south of San Francisco.
The plant houses tens of thousands of lithium-ion batteries used to store renewable energy. Such fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish, leading Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church to describe the situation as “a disaster.” While Church expressed confidence that the fire would be contained within the concrete building, the scale of the incident prompted the closure of all North Monterey County Unified School District schools and offices on Friday.
Vistra Energy confirmed that all personnel were safely evacuated following the fire’s detection and pledged a full investigation once the blaze is under control. The company emphasized its commitment to community safety and expressed gratitude to emergency responders.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, though the plant experienced similar incidents in 2021 and 2022 attributed to malfunctioning fire sprinklers. The ongoing emergency highlights the potential risks associated with large-scale battery storage facilities and underscores the need for robust safety measures.
