Fri Jan 17 07:02:55 UTC 2025: ## India Clears Refarming of 687 MHz Spectrum for Mobile Services

**New Delhi, January 17, 2025** – The Indian cabinet has approved the refarming of 687 MHz of spectrum for mobile services, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced today. This move, he stated at the Digicom Summit 2025, increases the total available spectrum for mobile services to 1,587 MHz.

The minister highlighted the projected need for 2,000 MHz of spectrum by 2030 and emphasized that the government is committed to meeting industry demands. While the recent cabinet decision represents a significant step, a gap of approximately 300 MHz remains.

To address this shortfall, Mr. Scindia revealed that a Committee of Secretaries, established by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is studying the issue and will present its report by mid-year. Further spectrum allocation is expected following the committee’s recommendations. The government aims to ensure a smooth digital telecom landscape in India, facilitating the growth of the sector. The 687 MHz refarming will be implemented in phases, with 320 MHz released immediately, and the remainder by the end of 2028-29.
