Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has initiated a high-profile outreach program at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. As part of their nationwide “Samvidhan Gaurav Abhiyan” celebrating 75 years of the Indian Constitution, BJP leaders distributed copies of the Constitution to sanitation workers, praising the event as a symbol of national unity.
BJP secretary Abhijat Mishra lauded the event, claiming the party honors those previously marginalized by other parties, contrasting their approach with what he characterized as opposition parties viewing Dalits and OBCs merely as vote banks. He emphasized the Maha Kumbh as a testament to the constitutional guarantee of unity.
This move comes amidst ongoing political maneuvering. The Samajwadi Party unveiled a bust of its founder, Mulayam Singh Yadav, while the Congress plans a rally emphasizing constitutional values. Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati is also actively engaging in the discourse surrounding alleged BJP disrespect of B.R. Ambedkar.
The BJP’s actions follow their previous efforts at the Kumbh Mela, including the establishment of schools for sanitation workers (2019) and Prime Minister Modi washing the feet of Dalit sanitation workers (2019). This year, Prime Minister Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have both described the event as a symbol of unity and social equality. The state government has further amplified this message with a new statue depicting Lord Ram and Nishad Raj in an embrace, targeting the politically influential Nishad community.
Political analysts interpret the BJP’s actions as a strategic response to recent electoral setbacks, particularly the loss of the Faizabad Lok Sabha seat, and a calculated move to consolidate public opinion. The opposition, unified on the issue of a caste census, presents a significant challenge. While the BJP emphasizes unity at the Maha Kumbh, the event is clearly playing a key role in the ongoing political battles leading up to the next elections.
