**Chennai, January 17, 2025** – S.P. Udayakumar, a prominent Indian activist known for his leadership in the 2011 protests against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, will receive the Resistance Award at the 2025 Nuclear-Free Future Awards. The awards, founded in 1998, recognize individuals and organizations dedicated to eliminating nuclear weapons, power, and uranium mining worldwide.
Mr. Udayakumar’s award recognizes his crucial role in mobilizing grassroots opposition to the nuclear plant, highlighting the potential dangers of nuclear energy, particularly for vulnerable communities. He will be honored alongside recipients from Brazil, Zimbabwe, the Navajo Nation, and the United States.
Other award recipients include Márcia Gomes de Oliveira and Norbert Suchanek from Brazil (Education Award), Edwick Madzimure from Zimbabwe (Solution Award), and Honorary Lifetime Achievement Awards for Joanna Macy and the late Klee Benally. The awards ceremony will be held on March 4th in New York City, coinciding with the Third Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons at the United Nations.
