Thu Jan 16 15:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Local Residents Targeted in Widespread Smishing Scam

**Quincy, MA** – A surge in smishing (SMS phishing) scams targeting Massachusetts residents is causing concern, with reports of fraudulent text messages claiming unpaid tolls on state highways. The scam, posing as EZDriveMA, requests payment for allegedly outstanding E-ZPass tolls, threatening penalties for non-payment.

Authorities, including the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) and local police departments in towns like Swansea, Norwell, and Braintree, have issued warnings about the fraudulent texts. The messages appear to be randomly targeted, regardless of actual toll road usage. MassDOT’s EZDriveMA website confirms the scam and advises against responding to such messages.

The scam is part of a broader nationwide smishing campaign, the FBI has noted. Similar scams involve fake package delivery notifications and offers of gift cards or app downloads. Experts warn that victims are more likely to click links in text messages than emails due to advanced spam filters.

Grace Buscher, a digital coach from Quincy, and several residents have reported receiving the fraudulent toll messages. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted receiving the message and immediately recognizing it as a scam due to prior warnings from a colleague. Another resident, 94-year-old Muriel Savoy Moloney of Weymouth, reports receiving similar fraudulent text messages about undeliverable packages.

Authorities advise residents to be vigilant and delete suspicious texts immediately. Never click on links or provide personal information in response to unsolicited messages. If unsure about a message regarding EZDriveMA, contact the official website directly for verification. For additional information on smishing scams, contact the FBI or local law enforcement.
