Thu Jan 16 15:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Maryland Drivers Warned of Toll Payment Phishing Scam

**ANNAPOLIS, MD** – The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) is issuing a warning to residents about a surge in text message scams targeting drivers. The fraudulent messages falsely claim recipients owe unpaid tolls, mimicking official correspondence from DriveEzMD, the E-ZPass administrator.

The MDTA’s customer service centers have been inundated with calls, reporting hundreds of scam attempts in recent days. “We received about 900 calls yesterday, several hundred today,” stated Carah Hall, lead account specialist for the MDTA. “We would never text anyone about an unpaid toll. We conduct all business through the U.S. Postal Service.”

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) of Greater Maryland confirms the scam, noting that scammers obtain phone numbers through various means, including online scraping and data breaches. Clay Campbell, a BBB spokesperson, advises victims to immediately cancel their credit cards and contact customer service for assistance.

The MDTA emphasizes that legitimate toll payments and E-ZPass account management are only conducted through official channels, such as mail or the MDTA website. They urge anyone receiving suspicious text messages to:

* **Report the scam:** File a complaint with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), including the originating phone number and any website links.
* **Secure accounts:** If you clicked a link or provided information, secure your accounts and dispute any unauthorized charges.
* **Contact MDTA:** Verify any alleged toll debt through official MDTA channels.

The MDTA stressed that DriveEzMD will never request payment via text message. Residents are encouraged to contact the MDTA’s customer service centers with any questions or concerns.
