Wed Jan 15 16:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Tech Takes Center Stage at Mahakumbh Mela: AI and Facial Recognition to Manage Massive Crowds

**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh** – The ongoing Mahakumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, is leveraging technology on an unprecedented scale to manage the expected 450 million devotees. For the first time, authorities are employing facial recognition and artificial intelligence (AI) to locate missing persons, alongside other technological aids to ensure safety and efficiency.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajesh Dwivedi stated that while the technology isn’t foolproof, it aims to improve crowd management and locate lost individuals amidst the massive, unpredictable crowds. The system works by generating digital images of missing persons from relative reports, then using these images to scan footage from thousands of strategically placed cameras.

In addition to facial recognition, the Mela utilizes RFID wristbands containing emergency contact and medical information, a live location-sharing mobile app, and AI-powered cameras to monitor crowd density and prevent stampedes by sending real-time alerts to officials.

Private sector involvement is significant, with Bengaluru-based startup Krutrim providing an AI-powered chatbot in 11 Indian languages, Google offering AI-powered maps for locating emergency services, and PhonePe providing affordable accident insurance. This technological integration marks a significant step forward in managing the logistical challenges of the massive Kumbh Mela.
