Mon Jan 13 11:21:54 UTC 2025: ## Impeached South Korean President to Receive Salary Hike Despite Suspension

**Seoul, South Korea** – Impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol will receive a 3% salary increase to 262.6 million won ($179,000) annually in 2025, despite being suspended from duty since December 2024 following his attempt to impose martial law. This equates to approximately 21.8 million won ($14,600) per month before taxes. The increase aligns with standard government appraisals, according to the Ministry of Personnel Management.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, also suspended following impeachment, will receive a similar salary increase. Both will receive their full salaries during the impeachment trial process, despite not performing presidential or prime ministerial duties. This amounts to roughly 130 million won for President Yoon over the next six months.

The payments have sparked controversy, as they contradict South Korea’s “no work, no pay” principle. However, a legal grey area exists, with no specific regulations addressing salary payments for impeached officials. The Constitutional Court is expected to rule on President Yoon’s impeachment within 180 days, though this is not a legally binding deadline.

While suspended, President Yoon has lost key powers, including the ability to declare martial law, command the military, and appoint officials. These powers have been transferred to Acting President Choi Sang-mok. However, President Yoon retains his official residence, security detail, and access to presidential transport, and will continue to receive his full salary. If removed from office, he will lose post-presidency benefits, including a substantial pension and staff support.
