Sun Jan 12 20:35:00 UTC 2025: ## Philippines Challenges China’s South China Sea Patrols

**Manila, Philippines –** The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has deployed a vessel to counter Chinese patrol boats operating near the main Philippine island of Luzon, according to a statement released Sunday. The Chinese ships, originating from Guangdong and Hainan, were observed in Philippine waters between December 30th and January 11th, coming within 111 kilometers of Luzon.

PCG spokesman Commodore Jay Tarriela stated that China’s actions aim to normalize its presence in the disputed South China Sea and alter the existing status quo. He emphasized the deployment’s purpose is to prevent this normalization and challenge what he termed “bullying behavior.” The incident raises concerns about escalating tensions in the region and the potential for further conflict involving the United States, a long-standing security ally of the Philippines. China claims most of the South China Sea, despite a 2016 international ruling against its claim. Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam also have overlapping claims in the strategically important waterway.
