**Bengaluru, January 13, 2025** – The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has launched its first fleet of air-conditioned electric buses, marking a significant step towards a greener public transport system. Five buses, supplied by OHM Global Mobility (a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland), are currently undergoing trial runs on the route connecting Kempegowda bus station (Majestic) and Kadugodi (Whitefield).
This initial deployment is a precursor to a larger rollout. OHM Global Mobility has been awarded a contract to supply 320 such buses to the BMTC under a gross cost contract (GCC) model, costing ₹65.8 per kilometer. The full fleet is expected by March 2025.
The 13-meter-long, low-floor buses are designed for accessibility, featuring retractable ramps. Each bus is expected to cover 250 kilometers daily. Four BMTC depots have been designated to accommodate the new fleet.
Early passenger feedback has been positive, with commuters praising the comfort and design of the seats. While some noted that the Volvo buses’ suspension might be superior, the overall response to the quieter and smoother ride of the electric buses was favorable. However, some passengers suggested a fare reduction given the environmental benefits. The BMTC aims to eventually replace its older Volvo buses on the Vajra and Vayu Vajra airport routes with this new fleet.
