Mon Jan 13 01:36:47 UTC 2025: ## Canada Prepares for Retaliation as Trump Threatens 25% Tariffs

**Vancouver, British Columbia –** Outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has warned that President-elect Donald Trump’s threatened 25% tariffs on all Canadian imports would severely harm American consumers, dismissing Trump’s suggestion of Canada becoming the “51st state” as a distraction. Trudeau highlighted the impact on essential goods like oil and gas, stating that Americans would ultimately bear the brunt of increased prices.

Trump’s tariff threat comes despite the significant economic interdependence between the two countries. Canada is the top export destination for 36 U.S. states, with nearly $2.7 billion in goods and services crossing the border daily. Canada also supplies roughly a quarter of the U.S.’s daily oil consumption.

In response to the threat, Canadian officials have indicated they would retaliate with tariffs on American products including orange juice, toilets, and steel. This echoes Canada’s response to similar tariffs imposed during Trump’s first term, which targeted goods such as bourbon and Harley Davidson motorcycles.

While Trump claims the U.S. doesn’t need Canadian resources, data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows the U.S. imports 4.3 million barrels of oil daily from Canada, a significant portion of its total consumption. Trump’s justification for the tariffs appears to be linked to concerns about border security, although Trudeau has pointed out that illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking from Canada are minimal.

Despite Trudeau’s attempts to address Trump’s concerns, including increased spending on border security following a November meeting, the tariff threat persists. This looming trade dispute adds to the challenges facing Trudeau, who announced his resignation last week amidst declining poll numbers for his Liberal party. His successor will take office on March 9th.
