**Gopiganj, Uttar Pradesh, India –** A 30-year-old blind woman, Sushma Gautam, succumbed to severe burn injuries on Saturday, allegedly inflicted by her husband who pushed her into a fire over dowry demands. Police have filed a case against Raju Gautam, her 35-year-old husband, who is currently at large.
The incident occurred in Sarai Mishrani village last month. According to her father, Ram Murat Gautam, Raju, who had been married twice before, demanded a motorcycle and cash as dowry. On December 13th, following an argument, Raju allegedly had his daughters from a previous marriage build a bonfire and then pushed Sushma into the flames.
Instead of seeking immediate medical attention, Raju abandoned Sushma at her sister’s home in Prayagraj two days later. Despite receiving treatment at multiple hospitals, Sushma’s condition deteriorated, ultimately leading to her death at the Gopiganj Community Health Centre.
Police have registered a case against Raju under sections 304B (dowry death) and 498A (cruelty to a woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act. Circle Officer Chaman Singh Chawda stated that efforts are underway to apprehend the accused. Sushma’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and the investigation continues. The couple had married in January 2024 under the Chief Minister’s Mass Marriage Scheme.
