**Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu:** The Pongal festival in South Tamil Nadu is marked by a significant tradition of gift-giving between siblings, strengthening familial bonds and upholding cultural heritage. According to Dr. Saundara Mahadevan, a writer and professor from Tirunelveli, brothers traditionally present gifts to their sisters on odd-numbered days during the Pongal festival.
These gifts, often delivered to the sisters’ marital homes, typically include items such as brass Pongal pots and ladles, rice varieties (parboiled and raw), sugarcane, turmeric, banana leaves, groceries, and clothing. In return, the sisters host a feast for their visiting brothers, often featuring chicken or mutton dishes.
This tradition, prevalent across districts like Madurai, Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Thoothukudi, is deeply rooted in matrilineal ties. Dr. Mahadevan emphasizes the cultural significance, highlighting the belief that women are seen as embodiments of Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth) and that the gifts are intended to ensure their continued happiness, both in their parental and marital homes. The exchange also fosters strong family bonds and preserves cultural traditions. There’s also a belief that consuming the abundance of fruits and vegetables included in the gifts promotes good health, benefiting both recipients and farmers.
Locals interviewed confirmed the practice, emphasizing the importance of maintaining familial connections and the joy associated with this traditional exchange, which persists despite technological advancements. The event remains a cherished celebration of family ties and cultural heritage in the region.
