**SONIPAT, Haryana (NDTV)** – A married businessman has been arrested for the murder of his live-in partner in Sonipat, Haryana. Upkar, a resident of Yamunanagar, allegedly stabbed Sarita, his school-time sweetheart and live-in partner of six years, before setting their home ablaze on October 25th.
Police initially treated the incident as a fatal house fire, but a forensic examination revealed Sarita had been stabbed prior to the fire. This led to Upkar’s arrest. The investigation began after Sarita’s brother, Trishla, filed a complaint, stating that his sister had reported a violent altercation with Upkar on the day of her death and had mentioned previous financial disputes. A call from Sarita to Trishla on October 25th, during which she claimed Upkar was trying to strangle her, was abruptly cut short.
Sarita, a college teacher originally from Zirakpur, Punjab, had divorced her husband in 2004 and had been living with Upkar since 2018. Upkar’s wife was reportedly aware of the relationship. A court has granted police two days custody of Upkar for further questioning and crime scene reconstruction. The investigation is ongoing.
