VIJAYAWADA, Andhra Pradesh – January 11, 2025 – Andhra Pradesh has completed the first phase of its ambitious statewide cancer screening program, examining 4.8 million individuals aged 18 and above. The program, launched on November 14, 2024, by Health Minister Y. Satya Kumar Yadav, aims to increase early detection and treatment of cancer.
The first phase involved door-to-door surveys by ASHA workers and ANMs, covering approximately 12% of the target population. This initial screening focused on physical examinations for breast and oral cancers, along with symptom questionnaires and encouragement for cervical cancer screenings for women over 30.
Those exhibiting symptoms are referred to Village Health Clinics (VHCs) for further evaluation. Cases requiring advanced testing are then sent to designated medical colleges, with a “green channel” established to expedite the process. Finally, those needing treatment are referred to the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Visakhapatnam. Preventive oncology units have been set up at all medical colleges, with specialists available twice a week.
In the 15 days since referrals began, seven oral cancer, three breast cancer, and six cervical cancer cases have been confirmed and are receiving treatment. The entire screening program is expected to last six to nine months. State Nodal Officer D.D. Syamala expressed confidence in the program’s ability to significantly improve early cancer detection in Andhra Pradesh.
