Sat Jan 11 16:10:00 UTC 2025: ## MassDOT Official Warns of Widespread E-ZPass Smishing Scam

**Boston, MA –** Massachusetts residents are being targeted by a widespread text message scam falsely claiming unpaid E-ZPass tolls. The fraudulent texts appear to originate from EZDriveMA, using the program’s logo and referencing the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). However, MassDOT officials have confirmed these are smishing (SMS phishing) attempts and are urging residents to remain vigilant.

MassDOT Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver revealed he personally received one of these scam texts, stating, “If you have a phone number, you can consider yourself affected—that’s how widespread it is.” He added that the scam texts are being sent indiscriminately.

The scam texts direct recipients to suspicious links, promising to settle a fabricated toll debt. MassDOT emphasizes that EZDriveMA will never request payment via text message and all legitimate EZDriveMA links will contain “www.EZDriveMA.com.” They advise against clicking on any unsolicited links related to EZDriveMA or other toll agencies.

Authorities recommend deleting any suspicious texts immediately and reporting them to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), including the originating phone number and any linked websites. Those who clicked a link or provided personal information are urged to secure their accounts and dispute any unfamiliar charges. The FBI is aware of the scam and similar smishing attempts.
